During Block 2, out elementary cohort had the opportunity to to host a math night at Quinson Elementary. The math night consisted of math games that we created in pairs for students to practice math concepts and strategies. The purpose of this math night was not only for students but also for parents/guardians to learn some math games that they can play with their children at home. As a group, we all had to come up with our own math game that would be tailored to students from K-7. The math game my partner and I came up with was a game to practice addition using a deck of cards.
When the night arrived, we all set up our tables according to our games. There was quite a good turn out of students that came with their parents/guardians and it was really neat to see them interacting with all of the stations set up for them. It was really great to have students coming up to our tables and showing their ability and skills in addition to their parents/guardians. Many of the parents/guardians were shocked that their child was so capable of engaging in math concepts and it was really heartwarming to see. It felt like we were making an impact in their lives and it was a good feeling to be able to be a part of students showing their parents/guardians their abilities in math.
I think having events like this around the schools and the community is so important. This math night allowed students and their parents/guardians to connect with each other and it allowed students to show their abilities and skills in math concepts. It also gave students games and activities to play at home so they can practice their math skills. I felt very honoured to be a part of this math night and it was a great feeling to make an impact in students lives.
